Family Literacy Grade Guides
Wondering what your child is learning in reading and writing this year, and how you can support them at home?

Available in English now, translations coming soon.
NYC Reads Together’s Family Literacy Grade Guides were developed by the Center for Public Research and Leadership (CPRL) at Columbia University in collaboration with NYC Public Schools and partners across the city’s literacy ecosystem. The guides offer families a resource to return to as children grow as readers and writers from Pre-K through 12th grade.
Each guide helps families:
Know what to expect: Understand important reading and writing skills children develop at each grade level.
Support learning at home: Explore simple, practical ways to build literacy through everyday activities and conversations.
Partner with teachers: Use suggested questions to discuss your child's literacy development and progress.
Getting ready for parent-teacher conferences
Conferences are a chance to share what you see at home and hear what the teacher sees at school.
Your child’s Grade Guide has a page called “Talking With Your Child’s Teachers,” with questions you can ask about your child’s reading and writing.
